Highland tuft and display board

I ran out of time, but here's what I was able to do in about 45 minutes of painting with my airbrush. It could really use a clear coat of something, but I'm afraid of spraying over the foam (the paint is thin). Anyway, it'll have to do because I won't have time to work on it tomorrow. I just hope the sand doesn't come off before judging. Not that I think the display will win, but it should help my score.

I also put some final touches on my warboss and big mek. I picked up some Army Builder highland tuft and glued it on. I had to get the fantasy base pack, so only a tiny amount of tufts come with that, but I have some of the bigger packs on order.

Army display board

Here's my work in progress for a quick and dirty display that I plan on using for Astronomi-con this weekend. Just some foam hills on a piece of wood. My army basically covers the whole area, so I don't really have any room to add emblishments, which is ok because I don't have time to make or paint them ether. I should note though that it is semi-magnetized. There is magnetic paint under the sand, and each of my orks (and 3 of the 4 battle wagons) have magnets on their bases. This makes things a little more sturdy, and I carry most of the army around in an old metal tool case.

I used the foam cutter in miniwargaming.com's terrain building room. A video about how fireman Tim built it can be found here. It was surprisingly easy, and I'm beginning to think of ideas for a table I'd like to build for the club.

DIY Weathering powders

So I've been really interested in getting some of the weathering powders that seem to be the rage lately. Unfortunately there aren't any local retailers that carry them, and shipping to Canada has killed any other deals. So, I pulled some old ideas out of my scale model history and decided to give soft pastels a shot. Note, these are not oil pastels, and are very similar to chalk (in consistency). Anyway, I picked up the cheapest package at my local Michael's craft store (with a 40% off coupon of course) and gave it a shot. Here are some pictures of my results. No black magic here... I just scraped the powder with the edge of an exacto knife, applied it with a big brush and used mineral spirits to wet it after.

The results are ok, but I think that's partly due to the lack of colour options. I'll keep experimenting and let you know.

Kommandos

Just finished off these guys... Funny thing is that I bought them almost a year ago and finally painted them up. I plan on using them to draw fire and run interference, so I want them to stand out on the battle field... hence the bright colours. Plus its a bit of a throw back to the 2nd edition kommandos.

I'm planning on using these guys at Astronomi-con so that's why I'm doing so many orks right now and not all my new blood angels. I still have to paint up my old metal deff dread and finish the battle wagon I just made the deff rolla for.

Lamartes wip

Here's a couple pics of Lamartes that I'm working on in between ork units. My kommandos and a battle wagon are priority right now, but I think he will paint up quickly now that I have the black armour done. Well, I'll probably do another edge highlight, but the hard part is done.

I used Reaper pure black this time, and found it to be a little lighter (more of a grey) than GW's chaos black, but much flatter (matte). I think I like this, so I'm going to be swapping that out for Chaos black in many instances. I did a couple grey highlights then a wash of badab black to bring things down again, and I think it worked nicely.

Scratch built Battlewagon deff rolla

Here's a couple pics of a deff rolla I scratch built. Its for my 4th battle wagon, so I didn't want to have another upgrade sprue one since I already have 2 of those. Anyway, nothing too difficult here. The arms are grabba klaw arms and the roller is a cardboard tube with plastic card ends and patches. Its basically the same size as the official one, so it shouldn't create any problems in game.

I've just started painting up the battle wagon as well, so I'll spray this black and give it the same treatment before moving ahead with the rest.

Astorath and Sanguinor

Just picked up Astorath, and man, this model is amazing. I would love to do a conversion by getting rid of the scrolls on the backpack and putting him on a flying base, but I don't have time for that... so he's going together without any conversions. Anyway... he's got an amazing pose and I can't wait to paint him up. Oh, and Sanguinor looks pretty good... I think I might give him a non metallic metal try. Should be ok since they did a masterclass in the latest white dwarf.

Mega Nobz painting

Here's some pictures of 3 mega nobz I just finished up. Nothing fancy since I needed to paint them up fast... I've got to paint a battle wagon and I'm working on my blood angels as well.

Commander Dante finished

Here's some pics of my shiny new Commander Dante (to go with the Sanguinary guard). Used all the same methods of painting, just spent more time on the fine details. The base is made from a wine bottle cork and I just ran a wire up through it into his foot to make sure it didn't break.

When I finished the Sanguinary guard I gave them a matte spray finish, which made the gold quite dull. I went back and gave all the gold bits a coat future floor polish and everything is good again. This was a good, quick fix and I think it helped improve the look. I did the same for Dante (although I'm not sure if it was before or after these pics)

1500 pt Battlewagon list

Here's a list I'm considering for the upcoming Astronomi-con tournament in Oakville (May 1-2). I'd like to use my orks since there will be too many space wolves and the new blood angels codex hasn't been out long enough.

Anyway, I've got 4 battle wagons, and with the new ork faq I think the deff rolla is the thing to have. I'm also a strong believer in ork boyz, so here's what I've come up with. C&C would be most welcome.

Painted Sanguinary Guard

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Sanguinary guard early, and as a result I have them painted up for the release day. A full listing of paints and work in progress pictures are over at miniwargaming.com/content/blood-angels-part-4.

These guys look awesome, but there are a couple things I don't love about them. First off, I'm not a big fan of the death masks. If I were to do them again I'd use the regular helmets. The other complaint is still about the clunky look they have. The weapons and stuff make them look too weighed down. I think they should have a more angelic look to them, maybe a little more graceful and looking like they are actually flying. But realistically, I really do love these models. Any small complaints aside, they are some of the best GW has released. I think I'll be buying some more.

I've also picked up the Sanguinor, Lamartes and a Baal Predator. I was painting Dante alongside these guys, so he's 90% done. If I have time he might get finished this weekend.
