Skullahamma conversion video

Here's a video I did a while back for MWG... actually I did this last summer, but its finally been posted to youtube. Enjoy.

Astorath Complete

Finished this guy up last night, and was suprised how long it took to get all the details done. Actually, it was the scrolls that took forever. They don't usually take that long, but there are so many on this guy. I'll have to remember that for Sanguinar. I kind of followed the orc boar boy red armour from WD 364, except I did a black wash first. In hind sight I shouldn't have done such a dark wash on it, but by the time I figured that out I wasn't going to repaint it all. The wings were done similar to Lamartes, except I used a mix of pure black, water and badab black to tone down the highlights.

I bought my Astorath from mwg here

Previous posts with work in progress shots are here:
Astorath WIP 1
Astorath WIP 2

The other thing I did do was try a NMM gold. There are no metallic paints on this guy, and I'm fairly happy with the results. I'll have to keep working on that technique.

New Plastic River Trolls

I just finished putting these guys together. I don't care what John from beasts of war says, these are awesome. I love the bulk of the models (like the beastmen minotaurs) and they have tons of character. I can't wait to paint them up. I did find it interesting that the sprue says copyright 2009... wonder that's about.

More pictures are on my channel on miniwargaming.com.

Astorath work in progress 2

Here's what he looks like now. I'm almost done... after these pictures all that's left are the scrolls, bone, and some small details like the seals and power weapon. One more decent sitting should do it. I did the wings similar to Lamarte's power armour, except I gave it a wash of water, pure black and badab black intead of just badab black. That should blend all the blacks and bring them down a bit. I might go over it with some more highlights, but I like how its looking now. I also did up his face, but its blown out in the photos because its really pale. I used the Reaper pale flesh triad and I like how it looks. It would be similar to using GW elf flesh.

Astorath the Grim Work in Progress 1

Here's a couple pics of the new Astorath model. I think this guy looks fantastic, except his head. I'm not sure how I feel about his tiara thing. Anyway, I'm doing up the armour with a decent amount of contrast and a paint scheme from the current white dwarf (mechrite red, blazing orange, vomit brown, with lots of shading). Everything else will be standard combinations from my growing BA army.

'ard boyz - Ork list

Here's the list I'm thinking of for tomorrow's 'ard boyz. I did fairly well with my deff rolla list at Astro, but that was 1500 points, and this doesn't have any more deff rollers. Should be interesting. Also, I'm finding that I really like using transports with my orks because I have way less stuff to set up at the beginning... I can actually finish games this way.

All the boyz units have nobz with power klaws, and all the vehicles have boarding planks. There are lots of big shootas (one on each vehicle and all the boyz mobs have one, except one that has 2). There are 4 deff rollers, 4 trukks, 111 orks, 14 power klaws. I'm going to bleed kill points in the 3rd mission, but it should be fun anyway (8 vehicles at 3 KP each).

HQ
Ghazghkull (225)
Big mek with KFF, power klaw and cybork (120)

Elite
Nobz mob, 6 nobz, 1 painboy, cybork, 2 power klaws, battle wagon, etc (425)
Mega nobz, 4 nobz, battle wagon, etc (295)
Kommandos, 10 with snikrot and 2 burnas (205)

Troops
Shoota boyz, 19 plus nob, 2 big shootas, will go in battlewagon (170)
Shoota boyz, 18 plus nob, 1 big shoota, will go in battlewagon with big mek (159)
Trukk boyz, 11 plus nob, sluggas, big shoota, trukk, etc (162)
Trukk boyz, 11 plus nob, sluggas, big shoota, trukk, etc (162)
Trukk boyz, 11 plus nob, sluggas, big shoota, trukk, etc (162)
Trukk boyz, 11 plus nob, sluggas, big shoota, trukk, etc (162)

Heavy Support
Battle wagon, Deff Rolla, red paint job, big shoota, boarding planks (125)
Battle wagon, Deff Rolla, red paint job, big shoota, boarding planks (125)

Total 2497

Lamartes done

After a busy month (of not painting) this guy is finally done. I had to put him on hold while I finished up some orks for Astronomi-con, but I was able to finish him up this week. I followed the painting guide for the Legion of the Damned master class in white dwarf 360, but used some reaper paints as well as GW ones. Specifically with the black armour, as I find reaper has a few more grey tones which saves me mixing too many paints. I have a hard time hitting the same colour twice when I mix, so this is great substitute. Also, my source for reaper paints (store.miniwargaming.com had a sale last week and I was able to get almost all the remaining paints in the reaper set (probably all the ones I want, but there are some coloured metallics left that I don't have).

I bought my Lamartes from the miniwargaming online store here

Pervious posts about Lamartes can be found here:

Anyway, here are some pics of Lamartes completed. Please feel free to post questions in the comments section.

Lamartes wip

I'm almost done this guy... probably one more night of work left. I've been using the Legion of the Damned masterclass article from White Dwarf for direction with some of the colours. That's one of the reasons that I love having the full GW paint set, I can try out all the wacky combinations they suggest. Anyway, here's a couple pictures of him.

Astronomi-con pics and thoughts

Well, after my first tournament I have lots of thoughts about things I'd do differently. First off, play more games. I kept running into trouble with not knowing rules off the top of my head, which was hard when I came across people who were unfamiliar themselves. Everybody interprets some rules differently, and you can forget that when you play against the same group of people who all play with the same understandings. Since my list was deff rolla dependant, and the rules for it are FAQ'd this was a bit of an issue. Mostly because the organizers of Astro don't recognize any FAQs except their own, including GW's. Only the errata is official in their minds, so this makes things a little difficult when you have things like the deff rolla that don't behave like everything else.

The other thing I didn't care for was that they include all imperial armour rules, including flyers. Luckly I didn't come against any, but I think that really throws the dynamic of 40k out when some players can compete against that and others can't.

Anyway, enough of that... My results were decent. I had a 50/50 win/loss ratio, and I'm sure if I were to play again I'd do better. They have different scenarios for each table, so its all about playing the mission, which I generally suck at. With a little more practice I'm sure I'll do better at those. My army score was decent and I mostly got dinged for not painting my 60 boyz up to the same standard as my elites and HQ's as well as not having a lot of conversions. My painting score was high though, so I was happy with that.

Overall it was great. The general timing of the events was ample for the points (2 hours for 1500 point games), and time for lunch. I would say that there was room for improvement at the end when we were waiting for the results (they didn't do the draw prizes or announce any painting winners until all the results were calculated). This meant that everybody had to hang around for an extra hour, which was less than ideal for those of us who had to drive home. The other thing that could be improved was the tables and terrain. They expanded the event to allow for more entrants, but this meant that a bunch of the tables were painted sheets with terrain on them. 1/3 of my games were on tables like this, so that took away from the value of the tournament, but hopefully that will be something that they change in the future knowing in advance how much interest there is for the tournament.

This guy got voted best single miniature:

Anyway, here are some pictures that I took at the event.
