40k tournament batrep

A quick battle report on the tournament at miniwargaming.com last weekend. It was a 1750, 3 game tournament with different missions for each game. I fielded my space wolves for the first time and learnt a bunch about them.

1). Canis was pretty ineffective and drew a lot of fire. He would have been much better with some more wolves around him to absorb fire (I gave him 2 wolves as wargear).
2). The long fangs + cyclone terminator + logan grimnar combo is super expensive and not very effective. A drop pod full of close combat wolf guard would have been much better.
3) Blood claws kind of suck. I had 15 in a land raider crusader and I don't think they really accomplished much all game.

All that said, it was my first time playing with Space Wolves (and space marines for that matter) and I won 2 of the three games and had a draw on the other one. The first game was against eldar and I was destroyed in close combat by some harlequins and an Autarch. I didn't win because my opponent was able to contest all of the objectives. The second game was against imperial guard with lots of tanks and 2 vandettas. This was a commander kill game and went quite well (even though I took heavy casualties). The third game was against Tau and I got hit really hard from the beginning (he stole the initiative and popped my land raider in the first turn). I managed to win with objectives, but another turn or so and I would have been toast.

The list I took looked something like this:

HQ
Logan Grimnar
Canis Wolfborn (with 2 wolves)

Troops:
15 blood claws + wolf guard
5 Grey hunters + wolf guard in a Rhino
5 Grey hunters + wolf guard in a Razorback
1 wolf guard on attack bike

Heavy Support
Long fangs + cyclone terminator in a drop pod
Landraider crusader with multi-melta

WFB tournament

Well, I played my first Fantasy game(s) on Saturday, and for what its worth, I think I did ok. My army list was lacking, and the strategy needed a little work, but all in all was a lot of fun. My first game was against Ogres, and I had a minor victory there. Second was against Scaven and I was 8 victory points away from a minor victory in that one (it counted as a draw), and my final game was against Vampire counts, and I was destroyed in that one. The movement trays worked well, and would have been a nightmare if I didn't have any of those made up. I won the "thanks for coming out" prize ($10 gift certificate).

Orc and Goblin army list

This Saturday my local club (miniwargaming.com) is having a WFB tournament that I'm hoping to play in. I haven't actually played Fantasy yet, so it might be interesting. I'm in the process of building my army list (as I assemble it as well), so it should be interesting. Currently what I'm pretty sure I'm bringing are:

4x 20 night goblins with spears (3 with fanatics)
2x 20 night goblins with bows
2x 10 orcs with bows
13 black orcs
1 giant
1 doom diver
1 orc boar chariot
1 rock lobba
2x 10 spider riders
1x goblin boss on a giant spider

I'm not sure what else to bring, but so far that's not a lot of points (its a 2000 pt tournament). I have some heros and a Wyvern. I'm not familiar with magic in fantasy, so that could prove to be a bit of a problem. Anyway, hopefully it goes ok, and I learn a bunch.
