X-Men United Wolverine tutorial and photos

Here's a video showing how I painted up Wolverine from Marvel United X-Men. He's a larger scale then I'm used to, so I tried using a zenithal base and mostly transparent paints.  There were a couple false starts (blue and black), but I'm pretty happy with how bright the yellow came through.  More pictures after the jump.  Let me know who I should paint next.

Marvel United - Wolverine WIP

I have a new project that I'm working on: Marvel United X-Men.  My brother ordered me a copy as a birthday gift and it just arrived this week.

At this scale I'm trying some slightly different techniques from my usual warhammer style.  Firstly I'm doing a grey primer with white primer zenithal highlight as a base coat.  Next I'm using either inks or contrast paints for base coats and trying to use the base coat to skip steps.  After that I'll do some basic layering and try to get the set done to a nice table top standard with minimal time.

I also have the basic Avengers Marvel United set and am painting them, but may not do video tutorials for them because there seems to be lots on YouTube already.

Astra Militarium Cadian with Contrast

Another quick contrast tutorial, but this one showing how to paint up a Cadian trooper for Astra Militarium.  If you're collecting an army of these guys this will help get them looking good quickly and on the table top.

Farstriders with contrast paints

Here's a quick tutorial on how to paint Stormcast guys quickly using Contrast paints for a non-metallic gold look.  Its not the best paint job, but its quick and easy and I think it looks decent on the table top.  Check after the jump for more pictures and a link to the youtube video.

Ork Boyz with Contrast

Here's a quick tutorial for painting Ork boyz using contrast paints.  Since most ork armies need lots of boyz it's handy to have a method to get the masses painted quickly.  The nice thing with contrast paints is that you can always go back and add highlights, but its not necessary if you just want table top level guys.

Khorne Blood Secrator with Contrast paints

I picked this guy out of my old Age of Sigmar starter kit because there are rules for him in Silver tower.  I've been painting up all the figures and expansions for that, but haven't had a chance to play it yet.  Anyway, gave this guy a go with contrast paints and am pretty happy with the results, especially his big icon.  Very simple to do with contrast and decent results for the amount of work required.

Skaven Warlord with Contrast paints

Here's a Skaven clawlord/warlord painted up with contrast paints.  As expected he painted up pretty quickly.  I used contrast paints for a non-metallic metal look on the silver and bronze areas.  This is passable, but a little more effort with some highlights or drybrushing would really help.

How to paint Magore's Fiends

Here's a tutorial for Magore's fiends.  I painted them up in a pretty standard colour scheme.  I laid down the red first with my airbrush then painted everything overtop of that.

I've pick up some contrast paints, so my next tutorials will probably be experimenting with different techniques (short cuts) with them.

Sepulchral Guard Tutorial and pics

Here's a tutorial and some pics of the Sepulchral Guard from Warhammer Underworlds.  I experimented with some inks to see if I could come up with a homebrew contrast (didn't work), and I talk about that in the video.  I may have used the wrong paints, mixes or even the undercoat... not sure, but when I have a chance to use the contrast paints I'll post an update.

Video and more pics after the break.

Ylthari's Guardians how to paint and pics

I started these guys right after Thundrik's warband, but wasn't able to get at them over the weekend.  Overall they were fun to paint.  I think what made it a lot easier was airbrushing the base colours (roughly).  This meant I didn't need to do multiple coats of light grey to get good coverage on their skin.  Other than that these guys were pretty straight forward.  Check out the video and additional pictures below.

Thundrik's Profiteers - tutorial and pics

These guys painted up pretty quick, and were pretty fun.  I started with a silver base and added variation to the metallics from there and some different colours for the fabric and leather details.  I used the Skywardens as my guide for colours (purple suits, light brown leather and black boots).  I tried to add lots of copper because I like how it looks.  I checked out the official video and found the guys a bit dark, so tried for a brighter look. Video and more pics after the break.

Ironskull's Boyz tutorial and pics

I just finished up the Ironskull's boyz for Warhammer Underworlds.  This warband painted up nice and fast since they have a fairly simple paint scheme.  The yellow is a little tricky to keep bright and clean, but I think it turned out ok.  You don't want it to perfect as these guys are orruks (orcs), and aren't likely to keep their stuff in good shape.

Godsworn Hunt in Jem theme, tutorial and pics

Here's my attempt at doing the Godsworn hunt in a Jem and the Holograms theme.  I think I got inspiration from some themed warband on Facebook.  Anyway, I basically used the below pic as a colour guide.  I didn't do anything too crazy with painting techniques, so the pictures are mostly useful for reference if you want to do something similar.  A full painting tutorial is available after the break if you want to see how I did them.

I think the bases are what made this work so well for me.  You can see more about that in the video, but the last picture below was the inspiration.  Let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions for future warband themes.

Chosen Axes Tutorial

Here's my latest Warhammer Underworlds warband to be painted up.  These guys went fast since they are pretty simple (and almost naked).  I used my airbrush to try to give a glowing feel to the runes on their skin, as well as the lava base.

Dreaded Ambull Tutorial and Pics

Here's the Dreaded Ambull video as well as still images of the finished model.  It was fun to paint up, especially since I was able to do so much with the airbrush.  Make sure you check out my Instagram feed for updates as I'm painting stuff..

Assassin posts

Here's some direct links to the assassin tutorials I did when I painted up the Assassinorum boxed game.  With the new rules coming up in the March White Dwarf I thought I'd make these easier to find.

Airbrushed NMM Stormcast Eternal Liberator Tutorial and finished pics

Here's that Liberator test model from the White Dwarf that I was working on.  He turned out ok, and I think I can make some improvements when I start painting up the guys from the box set.  Overall this is a managable paint scheme and should be repeatable enough for a whole army.  The longest bit is the edging, but its not too difficult and I'm sure I'll figure out ways to make it go faster.

Ultramarines Commander Tutorial

Here's another Ultramarines tutorial and painting guide from the Archives.  Its the Space marine commander from Assault on Black Reach, but he's virtually the same as the plastic blister commander. Enjoy!

Another addition to my growing Ultramarines force, this time the commander from the Assault on Black Reach box.  With the cape on this guy he painted up quite fast.  I was also pretty happy with how the banner turned out.  I've seen so many of these guys unpainted that it's cool to finally have one that's fully painted.

Pics and painting guide below.

Ultramarines Tactical squad Tutorial

Here's a look back at my archives of a tutorial for Ultramarines Tactical squads.  I've got some great Ultramarine tutorials, so check them out.

Alright, the first (of many) Ultramarines guys that I've got to paint up to make an army.  These guys will form the backbone of my army, so I'll have to paint up a bunch more of them.  I'm using the normal GW colours for these guys, and I'm sure I'll get faster at painting them as I do more of them.  Hopefully I'll get a vehicle tutorial posted soon.
