Nihilakh Oxide Demo (Video)

Here's a quick video showing how the Nihilakh Oxide works (using an Ogre Leadbelcher as a demo).  I really like the look, as the method I use is too dark.  I suppose I could mix a better colour, but I really like how this looks.  I even went back and did a couple skaven models after doing the video because I liked it so much.  Obviously you may not see the need to buy a whole bottle of it, but I can see myself using it quite often.

Ogre Gorger Finished

Here's that Gorger I was working on, all done.  I have posted a painting tutorial video and the still images (along with the paints) are at the bottom of this post.  I'm happy with how the flesh turned out, but I'm probably going to do something different for the other Gorger I've got waiting.

Ogre Gorger Work in Progress

Here's another model that I threw into the batch of Ogres I'm working on, the Gorger.  I have two of these actually, but am only painting one.  I decided on a dark skin colour and went with the same bright orange/red hair colour as the rest of my army.  I think it works.  Tutorial will come soon.

Hobby update

After a long summer off and some space marines to kick things started for the fall I'm working on some Ogres I've had in my to-do pile for a while.  I really like the ogre models, and this batch will really help fill in some of my ranks.  I think its 10 bulls with command and 2 iron guts in this batch... the standard bearer is the one with the knobbler on the top, so I'd like to use it as a BSB.  I think I'll make a tutorial for that one, but not the rest of the guys.

I've also got a bunch of high elves in the works, mostly a sky cutter that I started when it first came out, but haven't finished yet.  The great eagle is done, but the rest of it is kind of stalled.  Hopefully I can get that going again.

I'll keep doing the space marine tutorials since they get lots of hits, but I'd really like to focus on rounding out some of my unfinished armies.  Dark Eldar being one of the main ones.  Oh, and an easter egg at the bottom for anybody who like to see what else is in the pipeline :)

And now for a bunch of pictures.

How to paint Ogre Leadbelchers

I painted these guys up way back in the spring, but for some reason forgot to put together a video.  So here it is, along with the usual commentary.  I painted these guys at the same time as the Ironblaster, so the paints used and commentary will be very similar.  Hope you enjoy it, and let me know if you have any questions, comments or whatever.

Ogre Ironblaster (tutorial plus pics)

I've had this guy in my to-do pile for far too long.  I didn't get around to painting it for one reason or another, but I did this guy along with 8 leadbelchers (coming later).  I went back to using my reaper paints since that's what I've been using for my ogre army.  I also have the equivalent (or close) GW paints shown below.  The video is a little different, I filmed the first minute or so of each colour and have added a 360 rotation at the end.  Hope it helps...

Ogre WIP (Ironblaster and Leadbelchers)

I've been working on these guys for the last week or so... I haven't been taking as many pictures since I'm trying to do a video tutorial.  We'll see how it turns out, but I'm basically filming a minute worth of each stage and will compile it together with some commentary.  I really like painting ogres and once these guys are done I might actually have a playable army.

2012 Year in Review

Ok, so I guess its that time of year to look back and see what I accomplished in the hobby during 2012.  Outside the hobby world it was a busy year for me... I finished up my master's degree, switched jobs, moved to a new town and had some excellent vacations.

Ogre Army Showcase

Here's a video showing the various units of Ogres I've painted.  Unfortunately I haven't painted as many as I would like, and I keep getting distracted with other projects.

Finished Ogre Thundertusk

This guy took a little while due to other committments (outside warhammer), but I think its worth it.  Love the model and am happy to have him done.  As I mention in the video below I stuck with the same basic paint scheme as the rest of my Ogre army and used my airbrush to do some of the base colours.

Thundertusk WIP 2

Here's some more work in progress shots of the Thundertusk I'm working on.  Trying to use all the same colours as the rest of my Ogres, with the addition on the fur and tusks.  For the fur I'm doing a golden blond kind of colour and the tusks I'm doing a blue grey (both are Reaper triads straight form the bottle).  I think I'm past the hard stuff and now all I have left are highlights and details... the home stretch.

Ogre Thundertusk WIP

Another project that I have on the go is my Ogre Kingdoms Thundertusk.  I airbrushed a base coat on the fur last week and I'm done doing highlights on the individual strands now with Reaper Golden Blond.  I really like this model, so its jumping the queue a little.  Should get back to the Thunderwolves...

OSL critique - Firebelly

Here's a link to an article from Ron at From The Warp about OSL featuring my attempt with the Ogre Firebelly I did a couple weeks ago.  Some good feedback for anyone trying the technique, and highlights some of the areas I can improve for next time.

Ogre mob complete

Here's that Ogre mob of 6 all done.  I used the same paint scheme as the rest of my Ogres to help make them fit in.

Ogre mob WIP

Another unit in the pipeline... 6 ogres that I had previously stripped.  These were part of an army that I bought and stripped at the same time I picked up some of the new kits.  I'm using the same paint scheme as the other ogres, so I'm hoping to have a uniform looking army when I'm all done.  I haven't done any tattoos on these guys or blood stains... Not sure if I'm going do that, but I might wait until I have a workable army before I go and add those details.

Ogre Firebelly Finished

After a couple work in progress posts, here's the finished model.  Overall I'm pretty happy with him, and the fire as a light source was a cool learning experience.  I'm actually more happy with the fire than the OSL look... I've never really had much success with the flame look, and I think this one turned out ok.

Outside of the paint job I'm pretty disappointing with the finecast aspect of this mini.  For the price I'd expect something much higher quality, and this ended up having bubbles and seams all over.  Not enough to call it a miscast, but disappointing considering the price.  I've done a fair number of finecast models and as a whole the only upside I can see is that they are lighter (therefore don't need pinning) and easier to clean mold lines.

Firebelly WIP 2

Here's some pictures of the object source lighting from the flames.  I used reaper paints to accomplish this, and I think it turned out pretty well.  The majority of it was done with Marigold Yellow and then I added some highlights with Sun Yellow and Lemon Yellow.  These went on nice and transparent, so I'm pretty happy with the result.

Firebelly WIP (Ogre Kingdoms)

Working on this guy... same as the rest of my Ogres, except for the OSL with the flame.  I'm going to paint him up fully then do some glazes to do the flame reflections.  I think that should work ok.

Ironblaster Assembly video

Here's another Ogre Kingdom video showing how I assembled the new Ironblaster kit.  I have since primed it and added it to the painting queue... hopefully to complete soon.  Its a long video, but I walk through the whole assembly.

Ogre Stonehorn Complete + Painting video

This guy took some time to finish, but I'd say it was well worth it.  Lots of cool details, and an amazing model overall.  I used basically the same pallet as the Ogre Ironguts I did a while back, and I'm going to use the same colours for my whole Ogre army to get some unity.  I really like using the Reaper brown triads, as I can get subtle differences consistently without having to worry about mixing things.  Some of the inspiration came from http://fantasygames.com.pl/blog/ogre-kingdoms-stonehorn/, which was also featured on the GW site.  I like the colour combination of fur and blue/black.  I like the snow effect he does, but am not going with that look for my Ogres.

I used Army painter tufts for the base, which are basically the same as the new GW ones... although I want of pick some of those up to compare.  I also magnetized the hunter's weapon arm to allow switching between options.  Everything else is glued in place.
