Citadel Finecast Review: Marneus Calgar

I had the pleasure of getting my hands on the new Marneus Calgar and Honour Guard box in Finecast. Check out the video below for some up close HD video and my impressions (I like it a lot).

  1. They look amazing, as you said the detail is just fantastic in comparison to metal.

  2. I added a poll to my blog (http://twilight40k.blogspot.com) for people to log the quality of their finecast purchases.

  3. Warflake. The models are made from the same masters as the metal models were. There has been no extra detail added. The Finecast have the same details. Just in a different material. Any "extras" or more detail you "see" is an optical illusion. Prime a metal model grey and the lack of difference will be apparent.

  4. @Anon - You are partially correct. Yes, they are from the same masters, and technically no detail has been added. However, the details with finecast are a better representation of the original due to the higher viscosity and lower shrinkage of the resin they are using. Also, due to the ease of cleaning mold lines I think people's models will look better in the long run.

  5. I got a few models yesterday, and i'm happy with the detail level. I think painting this will be a challange. However, I don't know if I was unlucky, but a few models have problems. Worst is a Nurgle Deamon Prince. The two parts that form the torso are pretty warped and I had to Green Stuff them a lot to make it work. Now that I got to mounting the arm, it's not lining up either. I didn't try the hot water trick yet, as this resin seems a bit "odd" compared to others. Also, a Harlequin Shadowseer has a pretty big airbubble, right at the top of his hood. I'll have to GS that as well, or it will look really bad. Also, an Astorath the Grim has zone in one of his wings that is thin to the point of transparent. I don't know if that is fixable.
Now, I still have two models to mount. A Space Marina Chaplain that seems to be fine, and a Ghazghkull Thrakka I didn't inspect yet. I'm not that happy with three out of four models that need fixing I have to say. However, I suppose thsi will improve over time and if the finer detail results in better looking models, i'll accept that.

  6. Thank you very much I'm hunting for a good terminator character model to convert into a Grand Master Belial of the death wing, and had seen someone use a Calgar finecast as the basis for one.

There arent too many ultramarine Icons on his body correct? They are all additional to add on right?

Also there is no Box containing just a finecast Calgar correct? you have to get the honor guard with him correct.

I also looked at Stern but his head was attached as was one arm, but Damn his sword would make a good Sword of Silence for Belail.
I dunno about my skill with cutting off his arm/head.
