Underworlds Eyes of the Nine

Another warband painted up for Warhammer Underworlds.  These guys were a combination of contrast paints and standard methods to get a decent outcome in a reasonable amount of time.  One of the challenges with this warband is that there's such a diversity in painting the different troops.

Ironskull's Boyz tutorial and pics

I just finished up the Ironskull's boyz for Warhammer Underworlds.  This warband painted up nice and fast since they have a fairly simple paint scheme.  The yellow is a little tricky to keep bright and clean, but I think it turned out ok.  You don't want it to perfect as these guys are orruks (orcs), and aren't likely to keep their stuff in good shape.

Godsworn Hunt in Jem theme, tutorial and pics

Here's my attempt at doing the Godsworn hunt in a Jem and the Holograms theme.  I think I got inspiration from some themed warband on Facebook.  Anyway, I basically used the below pic as a colour guide.  I didn't do anything too crazy with painting techniques, so the pictures are mostly useful for reference if you want to do something similar.  A full painting tutorial is available after the break if you want to see how I did them.

I think the bases are what made this work so well for me.  You can see more about that in the video, but the last picture below was the inspiration.  Let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions for future warband themes.

Assassin posts

Here's some direct links to the assassin tutorials I did when I painted up the Assassinorum boxed game.  With the new rules coming up in the March White Dwarf I thought I'd make these easier to find.

Airbrushed NMM Stormcast Eternal Liberator Tutorial and finished pics

Here's that Liberator test model from the White Dwarf that I was working on.  He turned out ok, and I think I can make some improvements when I start painting up the guys from the box set.  Overall this is a managable paint scheme and should be repeatable enough for a whole army.  The longest bit is the edging, but its not too difficult and I'm sure I'll figure out ways to make it go faster.

Callidus Assassin done and tutorial

Finally, finished the last Assassin from the Assassinorum box set.  Each one went a little faster than the prevous one, and I'm happy to have them finished.  Now I have to finish up all the Chaos guys before I move onto the next project.

Culexus Assassin Tutorial Video posted

Following on the pictures is the video tutorial for the Culexus Assassin.  This guy painted up fairly quickly as I did a lot of the base coating at the same time as the other ones, and of course things go faster once you've done it a couple times.  If you're just joining the tutorials I suggest watching them in series as I cover some of the basic stuff in the first ones but don't repeat it each time.

Eversor Assassin completed and tutorial

Here's the second Assassin I've completed from the Assassinorum boxed set.  This one might be my favourite, mostly because of the dynamic pose.  I think 32mm bases are great for this type of model, even though the 25mm standard one probably makes more sense from a gameplay point of view.

The paint scheme is very similar to the Vindicare, except the red details and skull head.  These are your standard reds and bones.  The vials and tubes had some additional colour too.  I've done all the base coats on the final two, so I should have those tutorials in the coming weeks.

Vindicare Assassin Painting tutorial

I painted this guy up as the first trial from the Assassins box set.  He's a great model, as was seen in the assembly video, and surprisingly simple to paint.  I followed the painting guide that came in the White Dwarf that the box was announced.  Interestingly most of the colours were one layer highlight.  Examples being the red leather straps (just Pink Horror) and metallics (just Runefang).

I'm not sure I nailed the black suit.  Its an interesting highlight technique that tries to simulate a shiny skin, so you have stark highlights that are almost in the recesses.  I think it turned out ok, but not amazing.  I'm going to work on this for the other models as I do them, and we'll see if I can improve on the technique.  It also works for things like Savage Orc skin, so I'm keen to learn.

How to paint Iyaden

Another one from the archives, but not so long ago.  How to paint an eldar guardian in Iyaden craft world colours.  You can check out the original post here:
http://itslikewatchingpaintdry.blogspot.ca/2013/05/how-to-paint-iyanden-craftworld-eldar.html

I'm hoping to pick up the Assassins game tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some stuff to post for that.

How to paint Eldar of Craftworld Telennar

Here's a painting tutorial for the Eldar Farseer I picked up while in London.  I painted him in the Craftworld Telennar colours, which is the orange and grey ones featured in White Dwarf recently.  I've found this quite a cool paint scheme, and wanted to give it a go.  Turns out its a really simple scheme to paint as well, so I may paint up some more guys if I get a chance.

Lots of pictures including a painting tutorial video after the break.

How to paint Eldar Saim-Hann

Here's a tutorial that I did back in 2013 when the old codex came out.  I have a few more to come, but I think this is one of the more popular craft worlds.  I'm also working on a farseer in the Telennar colours (grey and orange).

You can check out more pics here:

Smaug airbrush tutorial video

Here's a commentary along with the videos I shot while painting this guy.  I mostly painted him in a few hour chunks at a time, so it took a lot longer than I had expected.  There were a few side projects in the middle (harlequins being one of them), but I'm glad to have him done with the video posted.

I used my new Badger Minitaire paints and was pretty happy with how they performed.  I didn't really experience any needle clogs or issues in general, so I'd say they were a success.  I still need to work out a process for them because it different than using GW base paints.  You have to be aware of the order you put things down so that you can ensure you get nice vibrant colours.

Harlequin Completed tutorial

Ok, it took me a little while to get this video compiled, but here you go.  In the video I show all the steps I took and give some suggestions about ways to do them a little differently.  Whenever you try out something you usually realize during the process that there are better ways of doing it.  For me I realized that they needed more colours after I did the diamond pattern, so I went back and added some bits here and there.

Also, someone commented on youtube about the brush I used for the fine lines. Yes, it looks like crap, but it has a good tip and is very predictable, so it works well with stuff like this.  I should probably replace it, but for now its the brush I use for checkers and other fine designs.

Flash Gitz Tutorial

Here's the promised Flash Gitz video tutorial.  These guys took forever, mostly because of all the different colours.  I'm happy to have them finished for my collection, and would love to give them a shot on the table top.

A lot of the painting tutorial uses the same colours as the GW Ork painting guide, with the main exception being how I started out.  I sprayed these guys black first, then silver and gave them a black wash.  This meant that I wasn't fiddling around with too many metallics later on, which I find takes a lot of time.  As usual, if you have questions, please leave them in the comments below.

Skaven Grey Seer Tutorial and Guide

Here's the finished Grey Seer as well as the tutorial video and painting guide.  To save time I didn't video the base colours or wash step, but they's nothing too interesting happening there.  I used the same wash for the while model (Reikland Fleshshade).  This was a lot of fun because he was done so fast.

Captain Karlaen Painting video and guide

Here's the finished tutorial of Captain Karlaen from Deathstorm.  I find these single characters a lot of fun to paint, but when it comes to full units all those extra details makes it pretty tedious.

Anyway, as usual, a painting guide is below, which is basically what I followed in the video.  This is also similar to the White Dwarf paint splatter article, except I like to do all the base colours at once (rather than start and finish each colour).  This helps reduce touch ups on finished areas and prevents missing areas that need to be totally redone.

How to paint Sanguinary Guard

Here's an updated tutorial for Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard.  I did one of these in the my old format a long time ago, but here it is in speed painting (2x) format using the current Citadel paints.

The old tutorial (along with pics) can be found here:
http://itslikewatchingpaintdry.blogspot.ca/2012/02/blood-angels-sanguinary-guard.html

How to Paint Grukk Face Rippa

And here's the tutorial for Grukk and the other warboss.  I don't show much of the badmoon guy, so I suggest checking out the Badmoon shoota boy tutorial.

Oh, and something screwed up with the audio... sorry about that, I think messed up when I recorded it, so I'll have to fix that for next time.

Nice model, although lacking a little personality I think... There was something missing about this guy when compared to the other recent Ork releases.  Regardless, cool model and fun to paint.

How to Paint a Broodlord

Here's a quick tutorial showing a nice paint scheme for the Broodlord in Space Hulk.  Since the Tyranid and Blood Angels box is coming out I thought this would be a timely tutorial.  This guy painted up really fast, partly because I had already basecoated and washed the blue before starting.  Otherwise its a straightforward video with results I'm happy with.

**update** there have been some comments on youtube about the length of the video... any thoughts from this crowd?  too short, just right, any feedback?

The painting tutorial I followed can be found on Tale of Painters here:
