My collection showcase - Christmas special

Merry Christmas everybody.  Here's a look at the current state of my painted collection.  I'm only showing what I have painted, but its a lot of stuff.  Hope you enjoy it.

Captain Karlaen WIP

So I caved to the pressure and picked up a Deathstorm box.  I "needed" the captain special character, and am interested in trying out some Tyranids.  Anyway, I'm doing up Captain Karlaen in the standard colours and will do a video of him when I'm done. It might double as a space hulk how-to since he's decorated to the same sort of level.

Anyway, he's coming along nicely, and I'm past all of the hard bits... I did most of the painting before assembling him, and the pics below show how I've got him currently.

How to Paint a Broodlord

Here's a quick tutorial showing a nice paint scheme for the Broodlord in Space Hulk.  Since the Tyranid and Blood Angels box is coming out I thought this would be a timely tutorial.  This guy painted up really fast, partly because I had already basecoated and washed the blue before starting.  Otherwise its a straightforward video with results I'm happy with.

**update** there have been some comments on youtube about the length of the video... any thoughts from this crowd?  too short, just right, any feedback?

The painting tutorial I followed can be found on Tale of Painters here:

Space Hulk Genestealer tutorial (Quick and easy)

Ok, so a confession... I started painting the Space Hulk Terminators from the last release and never finished them.  I didn't even start the Genestealers, so now I want to correct that by painting these guys up quickly.  I hope to spend a bit more time on the broodlord, but the main ones need a quick paint job.  Below is a tutorial that's basically a drybrush and wash technique to paint up the 22 genestealers fast.  Should look decent on the table top, definitely better than table top.

Space hulk 2009 Unboxing

I'm excited about the re-release of Space Hulk... its a good chance for me to finish painting the figures from the 2009 version.  I dug up some pictures from the archives (below) to show what was in the box that time around.  I'm also working on some painting tutorials to get up for the new edition. From what I've read the contents are virtually the same.  I'm curious to see the special rules for other chapters... maybe they'll release rules for other races like they did back with 2nd edition Space Hulk.

Blood Angels Terminator

Things are starting to gear up for the Blood Angels release, so here's something I've been working on in anticipation... Sergent Lorenzo from Space Hulk.

I should be getting my hands on some of the new mini's either Wednesday or Thursday, so be sure to check back to see them. I'm pretty excited, and can't wait to start building some lists.

Space Hulk progress

With the holidays I've managed to find some uninterrupted painting time. I decided to revisit the Space Hulk terminators I had started. This time I worked on the crux on their shoulders (base coat, shade and 1st highlight done), the purity seals (parchment only needs some writing), and the ropes (done). The crux and parchment was done with the same colours GW recommended in their painting tutorial online, and the ropes were done with reaper paints (Earth brown, Tanned leather, Amber gold and Golden blond).

Space Hulk 10% off at MWG

Here's a PSA for anybody still looking for Space Hulk. Last week GW announced that they found some more copies to sell on their website. MWG was able to get some of these copies, and has 10 copies to sell at 10% off. Also of note, MWG has free shipping for orders over $100 (USA and Canada). Check it out here.

Also of note, I haven't posted this weekend, but have been painting stuff up. Things have been a little crazy at work, and I'm in the middle of exams, so I'll post stuff when I get a chance. Oh, and I'll be announcing some exciting stuff that I'll be doing next year with Miniwargaming.com... expect to see some new armies added to my collection :)

Getting Terminators Table Top Ready

Ok, so I'm running out of time for this weekend's Space Hulk/Planet Strike event at Miniwargaming. So, I'm aiming for table top ready, which in this case will highlighted and shaded red and as many other base colours as I can finish before Saturday. I'm adding some black right now, but these guys have lots of detail, so I expect to be doing a number of passes before I get all the fiddly bits done.

Airbrushing SH Terminators

Base coat, after lots of trial and error, is finished. I can happily report that Reaper paints airbrush very well. I mixed them about 1:1 with liquitex airbrush medium, but I'm sure flow improver or even future floor polish would work fine.

The goal was to get the red armour done with the reds from Reaper that I love so much. This partially successful. I ended up trying to do layers and highlighting with the airbrush that was mostly a waste of time. I ended up giving some Baal Red washes and lots of drybrushing to get the layers I was looking for. In the end I would have been better off with a black undercoat and just doing the deep red and blood red with the airbrush. Anyway, here's the order that these were painted in:
Burgundy Red Krylon spray
Reaper Deep Red airbrushed for full coverage
Reaper Blood Red airbrushed for slightly less coverage
Reaper Fire Red airbrushed for even less coverage
Reaper Phoenix Red airbrushed very lightly.

At this point I wasn't happy with the colour. It was basically a light red without the deep shadows I was hoping for. So, I gave them all a GW Baal Red wash. This basically eliminated the highlights, but made the red much nicer looking. From this point I went through the same order of Reaper Reds, but with a 3/8 wide flat drybrush. Again, not terribly happy with the washed out red look, so I gave another Baal Red wash. This time I was quite happy with the look, so just gave a light Phoenix Red drybrush and I think I'm done. I am planning on doing Blood Angels when they come out next year, so this learning experience was a good one. I think I'll do a devlin mud wash near the beginning next time, build highlights on top of that, then bring it down with the Baal red wash.

Note: this project jumped the que and bumped the spider riders because of an upcoming Space Hulk game at my local club (miniwargaming.com).

How to: Space Hulk Terminator base magnetization

Here's how I went about magnetizing my Space Hulk Terminators so that the can be put on 40mm bases for 40k, but also used without the bases for Space Hulk. I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but here's one way to skin the cat. This article was orginally written for miniwargaming.com.

What you will need:
Space Hulk
1/16" x 1/32" Magnets (2 per terminator)
1/8" x 1/16" Magnets(2 per terminator)
1/4" x 1/16" Magnets (Optional, 1 per terminator)
Green Stuff (only a tiny bit is needed)
40mm bases (1 per Terminator)
Hobby Drill (with 1/16" bit)
1/8" drill bit
Sand paper or file
Hobby Knife

Step 1:
Remove terminator from sprue and file the base flat.

Step 2:
Drill 1/16" holes in base right under feet. You don't need to go too deep, only about half way through the foot, not as deep as I went in the second picture (I'll have to fix that with green stuff).

Step 3:
Drill a shallow hole in the same spot with the 1/8" drill bit (do this by hand). You only need it about 1 or 2mm deep, just enough to make a pocket for the top of a magnet to catch. Notice that the 1/16" hole is still visible and goes a bit deeper.

Step 4:
Drill 1/16" holes in the 40mm round base in line with the holes in the terminator's feet. Enlarge these to 1/8" holes. If they are slightly out of line you can enlarge them with your hobby knife. Green stuff will be used, so it's ok if they are a bit big.

Step 5:
Make up a small bit of green stuff. A pea sized ball will be enough.

Step 6:
Get aside your magnets, and make sure they are inline. This is how they will end up:

Step 7:
Put a small amount of glue on the top 1/16" magnet and put it in the hole. The 1/8" magnet will help you position this, and it should stick out below the bottom of the terminator's base. Be careful how much glue you use, as you don't want the 1/8" magnet to stick to the Terminator.

Step 8:
Put the 40mm base on, and add a bit of Superglue.

Step 9:
Squish two small balls of green stuff over these magnets. Make sure you don't push the magnets through. You can flip it over and push the terminator down to make sure it is flat on the round base.

Step 10 (Optional):
This step is added so that I can use cookie tins to transport my guys. Check the other article in my channel for a tutorial on this.

Add some super glue and the rest of the green stuff and squish the 1/4" by 1/16" magnet to the base. Let it stick down a bit and squash it in place by pressing the base on a flat surface.

All done!

Space Hulk Terminator base Magnetization

I've just posted an article over at miniwargaming.com about magnetizing a terminator base. Login is required, but its free.
The magnets I used (and links to where I buy mine) are:
1/16" x 1/32" Magnets (2 per terminator)
1/8" x 1/16" Magnets (2 per terminator)
1/4" x 1/16" Magnets (Optional, 1 per terminator)
