Assembling Cataphractii Terminators

Man, I'm having a hard time finding time to assemble all the guys from this box.  So many bits to clean up so it takes for ever.  I guess that's a blessing and a curse with not having single pose models.  Lots of options, but takes way longer.

Captain Karlaen Painting video and guide

Here's the finished tutorial of Captain Karlaen from Deathstorm.  I find these single characters a lot of fun to paint, but when it comes to full units all those extra details makes it pretty tedious.

Anyway, as usual, a painting guide is below, which is basically what I followed in the video.  This is also similar to the White Dwarf paint splatter article, except I like to do all the base colours at once (rather than start and finish each colour).  This helps reduce touch ups on finished areas and prevents missing areas that need to be totally redone.

Ultramarine Terminators Finished and Tutorial

Got these guys finished pretty quickly.  Its nice to have small squads instead of huge 30 man boyz mobs... things go so much quicker and are much less tedious.  Now that I've done a bunch of Ultramarine things they are painting up faster as well, so that helps as well.  I'll have to get some vehicles done soon, and maybe another tactical squad so that I'll have a usable army.  I also have a bunch of stuff on order (including legion of the damned!) so once that arrives I'll have some fun stuff to do as well.  Anyway, video of the whole process (one guy, 4x speed) below as well as a bunch of pics.

Ultramarines Terminators WIP

For the next unit in my Ultramarines army I have decided to go with some Terminators.  These guys are mostly Assault on Black Reach, but I've added a chain fist as well as an assault cannon to beef them up a little.  I've got a landraider in my assembled pile, so it can be used with these guys.

I'm finding with each unit that the Ultramarines paint scheme is getting much easier.  I think that is mostly by design, and might be why they are so popular.

Deathwing Terminators Finished

Here's the Deathwing Terminators from Dark Vengeance all finished.  I've done up a better version of the painting guide and included the images below.  Hopefully this makes it better for people trying to follow my tutorials.  Check out the images below.  The full painting guide is below the finished images, and are the same as what's in the video.

In other news, I set up a new photo booth in my painting room, so I should be able to improve the quality of my images going forward (of finished models anyway).

Deathwing Termintaors WIP 2

I've had a hard time getting to my painting table on a regular basis, so these guys are taking longer than expected.  The layer of redoing the white armour was quite slow, almost an hour each guy.  Now that its done things should pick up an one more sitting should finish these guys off.  I really like the warm colour of the armour, so I think its worth it.

Deathwing Terminators WIP

Here's the latest in the Dark Vengeance series... the Deathwing Terminators.  I've got to finish this stuff up soon because I have a lot of stuff to get done before Christmas and have also ordered the Hobbit game.

Space Wolf Terminators

Here's a set of 5 wolf guard terminators that I just finished up. I used the same basic paint scheme as I did for Logan Grimnar (article here) and Njal Stormcaller (article here). The full list of paints used can be found in those articles.

Anyway, these guys are a combination of Wolf guard parts as well as normal terminators.

Space Hulk progress

With the holidays I've managed to find some uninterrupted painting time. I decided to revisit the Space Hulk terminators I had started. This time I worked on the crux on their shoulders (base coat, shade and 1st highlight done), the purity seals (parchment only needs some writing), and the ropes (done). The crux and parchment was done with the same colours GW recommended in their painting tutorial online, and the ropes were done with reaper paints (Earth brown, Tanned leather, Amber gold and Golden blond).

Getting Terminators Table Top Ready

Ok, so I'm running out of time for this weekend's Space Hulk/Planet Strike event at Miniwargaming. So, I'm aiming for table top ready, which in this case will highlighted and shaded red and as many other base colours as I can finish before Saturday. I'm adding some black right now, but these guys have lots of detail, so I expect to be doing a number of passes before I get all the fiddly bits done.

Airbrushing SH Terminators

Base coat, after lots of trial and error, is finished. I can happily report that Reaper paints airbrush very well. I mixed them about 1:1 with liquitex airbrush medium, but I'm sure flow improver or even future floor polish would work fine.

The goal was to get the red armour done with the reds from Reaper that I love so much. This partially successful. I ended up trying to do layers and highlighting with the airbrush that was mostly a waste of time. I ended up giving some Baal Red washes and lots of drybrushing to get the layers I was looking for. In the end I would have been better off with a black undercoat and just doing the deep red and blood red with the airbrush. Anyway, here's the order that these were painted in:
Burgundy Red Krylon spray
Reaper Deep Red airbrushed for full coverage
Reaper Blood Red airbrushed for slightly less coverage
Reaper Fire Red airbrushed for even less coverage
Reaper Phoenix Red airbrushed very lightly.

At this point I wasn't happy with the colour. It was basically a light red without the deep shadows I was hoping for. So, I gave them all a GW Baal Red wash. This basically eliminated the highlights, but made the red much nicer looking. From this point I went through the same order of Reaper Reds, but with a 3/8 wide flat drybrush. Again, not terribly happy with the washed out red look, so I gave another Baal Red wash. This time I was quite happy with the look, so just gave a light Phoenix Red drybrush and I think I'm done. I am planning on doing Blood Angels when they come out next year, so this learning experience was a good one. I think I'll do a devlin mud wash near the beginning next time, build highlights on top of that, then bring it down with the Baal red wash.

Note: this project jumped the que and bumped the spider riders because of an upcoming Space Hulk game at my local club (miniwargaming.com).
