Liberators NMM test model WIP 2

Here's a look after another night of painting this guy.  Basically I've added edge highlights with Zamesi Desert on the gold and Administratum grey on the silver parts that were airbrushed.  The other details I'm adding are blue (Kantor, Alaitoc, Hoeth), parchment (Ushabti, Seraphim sepia wash, Screaming skull), and leather (Khorne, Nuln wash, Emperor's children).  I haven't finished the parchment, base or leather, but everything else is basically done.  As I mentioned before, I think I'd like the gold a little brighter, so when I'm airbrushing I'll add a bit more highlights and maybe do a wash in the recesses to tone things down.

The base is wet in the pictures because I put some drops of army painter washes on the sand.  I do this to help speed up the painting process later (just add another wash then drybrush).

Overall I think this test model went well.  He looks decent for table top and was pretty easy to paint.  Its an interesting scale to work with, definitely larger than most of the other stuff I'm used to working with in Fantasy, so we'll see how the box goes when I pick up my pre-order this weekend.

How to Paint NMM Gold

Here's a tutorial showing (at 2x speed) exactly how I painted the non-metallic metal on the Phoenix Guard I just did.  There were a bunch of requests on youtube for a tutorial like this where I film the whole process.  I've mentioned before that I use Reaper paints for this, but in this I have used GW paints.  I get a lot more requests for the specific GW paints, but I actually prefer the Reaper ones for NMM.  They have a slightly more yellow look straight out of the bottle, which I like.  To due true NMM you would want to use more steps, but this is a quick process that is great for blocks of troops.

Blood Angels: The Sanguinar (NMM finished)

As featured in a couple work in progress articles, here's the finished product.  As an indirect review of the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass book, I'd say the articles are great.  This was originally published in WD 363 as a masterclass article.  The new masterclass book is a compilation of previously published articles and one additional one.  I really like the articles, and they were enough reason to buy the white dwarf in themselves.  That said, I don't know if I'll get the book since I have all the back issues... we'll have to see.

I'd say that my non-metallic gold is improving with each model I do.  I'm also pretty happy with the non-metallic silver bits.  Its still not perfect, and it helped a lot that I had a guide to go by.

Anyway, here's some pictures... video tutorial is below as well as all the paints I used.

The Sanguinar WIP

Here's a couple pics of The Sanguinar, Blood Angels special character done in Non Metallic Metal.  I decided to do this guy because of the 'Eavy Metal painting guide that just came out.  I had the old White Dwarf that the article originally ran in (#363), and most of the other articles so I might do a review by proxy... or I might buy it... still undecided.

Anyway, I'm basically following the article, but using Reaper paints instead of GW ones.  Less mixing that way, and that makes for easier painting.

Colours used so far are (reaper unless otherwise specified):
Oiled Leather (base)
Palimino Gold (1st highlight)
Ruddy Leather (1st shade)
Devlin Mud (GW Wash, 2nd shade glaze)
Badab Black (GW Wash, 3rd shade glaze)

Still to come:
Buckskin pale (2nd highlight)
Pure White (final highlight)
Plus all the other areas...

Here's what I have done so far (more pics after the break).

Non Metallic Metal

Here's a video showing a couple different Non Metallic Metal models I've done. I've included the paints I've used for reference. Let me know what you think.

Non Metallic Metal (test)

Here's my first go at non-metallic metal... I picked up the Reaper Learn to paint kit from miniwargaming.com during their boxing day sale. I really like how the NMM looks, but I haven't found a good guide. Anyway, I'm sure I could have found something online, but I gave this a go... here's the results of my first test... I'm sort of happy with the results, but I think it could be a lot better. Any feed back?
