Goblin - Basing question

Ok, I've finished off the skull shields and am ready to tackle the basing issue with the goblins. I have two questions for anybody to chime in about...

With 40 goblins, what is the best formation to run? I'm still pretty new with fantasy, but I know it needs to be at least 5 wide and 4 deep, but since I have 40 goblins neither of those is a limiting factor.

Second question is regarding bases. I've been toying with the idea of regiment bases, but then it occurred to me that I could use 40mm square bases (which I happen to have few extra lying around). Does it make sense to use either of these, or should I just reglue the guys to their 20mm square bases in a way that they fit together in formation?

  1. I have no real knowledge of Goblin armies, so I can't give you any advice on what formation to run.

However, with regard to the regimental and 40x40 bases, I can offer a suggestion: experiment with how you will remove casualties. For example, let's say you are running a unit of 40 Gobbos (8 wide and 5 deep), like in the picture you posted. Some dastardly Dark Elf Crossbowmen shoot up your unit, inflicting 7 casualties. Those seven guys are easy enough to remove, you just pop 'em off the last rank. But what happens with a unit of Shades run out of the trees and shoot down 4 more of your Greenskins? How will you remove those models?

With regimental bases and such, it all comes down to finding a system that works for you and doesn't require a lot of time and effort removing (and adding back) models from the unit.

Goblins die quickly, so it would probably be more convenient to have them on bases where you can remove more than one model at a time.

  2. I will provide you with my two cents. Run your goblins 6 to 8 wide. This does cause movement issues however when you get into hand to hand combat you want to be able to hit back. Your Goblins will take many wounds and if you take more wounds then in your front rank then you get no attacks back, unless they have spears.

As to your basing question, don't use the 40mm bases. Look at the rules for removing causalities. The logic behind this rule is for the flanking rules. If you are charge in the flank only the models on the sides can attack. Having the models on a 40mm base might cause some problems. Keep it simple, I understand why you want to do this however I see it causing issues.

  3. I would not run them any wider than 6 wide, Goblins are weedie things and tend to die by the bucketfull. by keeping them narrow as possible you will keep your rank bonus longer.

On the 40mm base, sure I dont see why not. I have even seen it used to make a large unit more interesting. Either by putting in a scenic element or by placing the models so they interact.

  4. Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't have any time to work on this last night, but hopefully I'll have a couple minutes tonight. I think what I might do is put most of them on 20mm bases and make sure they rank up nicely, then make one or two 40mm bases that will go at the front and be mostly for show.
