Nihilakh Oxide Demo (Video)

Here's a quick video showing how the Nihilakh Oxide works (using an Ogre Leadbelcher as a demo).  I really like the look, as the method I use is too dark.  I suppose I could mix a better colour, but I really like how this looks.  I even went back and did a couple skaven models after doing the video because I liked it so much.  Obviously you may not see the need to buy a whole bottle of it, but I can see myself using it quite often.

Review: New Citadel technical paints UPDATED

So I zipped over to GW today and picked up all six of the new technical paints so that I could give them a try and post up a review.  I've done that in the video below, and summarized it in print here.

UPDATE:
There seems to be lots of controversy about Agrellan Earth... apparently its not working for people and GW is saying its a bad batch.  The GW I purchased mine at now says that they are out of stock, which I think means they pulled it off the shelves.  Anyway, I was able to get mine to work and have posted a picture below of what I was able to achieve.

New Paints Review: Conclusions

How to Paint Citadel Miniatures 2012 - Book Review

Here's my take on the new how to paint book from GW.  Its a well done book, but at $60 not everybody is going to get good value out of it.

New Citadel Paint Review: Metallics

The Metallic part of a paint range is very important to me and GW has had great silvers in the past, but not so great golds.  Here's a video where I look at the metallics in the new 145 paint range from GW.

New Citadel Paints Review: Texture

Here's another new section of the range for GW.  While not technically paints, they do replace something that you used to have to paint; the sand after attaching it to your base.  There are other similar options out there, but this one seems decent if a little unnecessary.  Might be nice to have one of these sitting around, but most people won't want all 6.

New GW Paints Review: Dry range

Here's a review about the new Dry range of paints.  This is perhaps the most unique offering in the new set, and to my knowledge isn't done by any other hobby paint range.  For the most part I don't see myself using all of these, but for things like bases I will use it.  I can also see the silver one (Necron compound) being the new must have paint.  If you're like me and do metallics first when there's lots (like on Orks) then this is the way to go.  Just drybrush on the Necron Compound over a black base and you've got your silver base coat much faster than painting.

New Citadel Paint Review: Bases (foundations)

Here's the second set of paints to be reviewed... foundations.  Overall they seem to behave similar to the old foundations.  The colours aren't the same, but there's lots more.  The coverage seems similar but they might not be quite as matte.  This doesn't really matter because you're going to cover it with a shade and layers.

New GW Paint Review: Shades (washes)

Here's a video where I show how the new shades compare to the old washes.  In the video we have Badab Black vs. Nuln Oil, Devlin Mud vs. Agrax Earthshade and Thraka Green vs. Beil-Tan Green.  The conclusion is that the colour match is very close and if anything they behave a little better.  They seem to have a lower surface tension which leads to less foam type bubbles forming when you paint it on quickly.

Citadel Paints Review

Here's my first impressions of the new citadel paints.  I picked up the set as well as the painting book and am working my way through them now.  The main thing now will be setting out which combinations will get the various looks I'm trying to get.  If you have any questions about the new paints let me know and I will try to answer them.

New range Review video (from Buypainted)

Just watched this review, and while it is quite critical I really value it.  This guy has lots of amazing videos on youtube and clearly knows his hobby stuff, so I'd recommend watching this.  Not sure what the end result is going to be for me, I still haven't bought any of the new paints and I'm debating switching over to Vallejo or staying with my Reaper paints.

Any other input out there?

Review: Citadel Cleanup kit

Another review of a new tool kit from Gamesworkshop.  I filmed this a week ago, and since then have really been enjoying using the mold removal tool.  So, the jist of the review is that the mold removal tool is useful, the brush not so much.

Summary: Not necessary, but not that expensive.  Handy size, but you can get something cheaper if you want.

Eavy Metal Brush Set Review

Here's a review of the new 'Eavy Metal paint brush set. Its a limited release just in time for Christmas with two 'Eavy Metal branded brushes, two pots of matte medium, a metal case and a small booklet. Liquid Green Stuff Review

Here's a quick review of the new Liquid Green Stuff Games Workshop is offering. Readers digest version: 

Pro: Easy to apply with a paint brush.
Super handy that its water soluble (easy to clean up, and smooth out).
 Easy to sand or scrape after dry.
Dries relatively quickly.

Con: Some shrinkage after it drys
GW's paint container... not sure how long before it dries out.

White Dwarf reviews no more

Well, it only took a couple months, but I've decided to stop doing White Dwarf reviews. I have a subscription for the year, and have been really enjoying them, but I don't see the point. I've really enjoyed the 'eavy metal articles and I like having a glossy magazine with lots of pictures. If that works for you then the $10 a month is worth it, otherwise just pick up the ones that concern your army.

Anyway, I'll delete the thing on the side at some point...

White Dwarf 359 (December 2009) Revew

This review is going to be a little different from the last ones because I'm going to write it from memory. I've had this months copy for a couple weeks and have been flipping through it a bit reading some articles and drooling over the fortress of redemption.

Anyway, off the top, this issue comes with some great ideas for a WFB campaign using mighty empires. They describe what a couple studio guys have done, including some tables to roll on for casualties, and give some options to transfer it to 40k. I wish they would make firm rules for mighty empires/planetary empires campaigns, but this will do in the mean time. I guess the upcoming 40k battles expansion might help in this area.

Another great thing about this issue is the coverage of the new 40k fortress of redemption. This is an impressive kit that I'd love to own, but probably won't buy because I don't have a table at home. Anyway, the usual great step by step painting article, but also included are the rules that are in Planet strike. This reminds me of the good old days of WD when they would release rules in it and it was actually useful for gaming.

All in all, I enjoyed this issue. I have added a comment to the Space wolves issue mentioning how much I'm referencing it while building my SW army. I think this is where the current format of WD shines. Its still lacking the necessity that it once was 20 years ago (for exclusive rules), and the GW website is a great reference for painting and modeling, so I'm not sure what its exact purpose is meant to be (other than pretty pictures of stuff to buy), but I still enjoy it. Now I just need to pick up that great squat mini (White dwarf in space)...

Bottom line, if you're interested in Skaven, there are plenty of pretty pics of the new products you can buy. WD seems to swing the focus between 40k, WFB and LOTR. This month is clearly Fantasy heavy, although there is more 40k stuff in this issue than there was fantasy in the last one.

This issue seemed to be heavier on the painting articles. Stage by stage includes: Painting Ratmen (full page), Easterlings (4 pages), 'Eavy metal Khan(8 pages). I love these articles, as I spend most of my hobby time painting, and any new ideas are welcomed.

Much like last month, everything looked so great with the Skaven stuff that I wanted to start another army. Of course, I can't as I have way too much stuff to paint already. The Skaven stuff is fantastic, and I can't wait to see some of it on the table top.

Since this article already contains more words than I've read in the new WD, I'm going stop, otherwise I'll seem like I've read it. I haven't. These come once a month, and I spend most of that time looking at the pictures.
